The museum opened in 1891 to show the collections of the Habsburg family. The paintings fill the first floor, with a very large group of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and strong Dutch, Flemish and Italian rooms. Other collections cover Egyptian objects, antiquities and the Kunstkammer, and the staircase and the domed hall are worth a look before you start. The visit has no time limit once you are in.
What to look for
- The Bruegel rooms
- The staircase with its paintings by Klimt
- The Kunstkammer with the Saliera
- The Egyptian collection
