The market fills a block between Athinas, Sofokleous, Evripidou and Aiolou streets, and it opened in 1884 with a glass roof and cellars added in 1886. The fish hall sits in the middle, with fresh catch from the islands arriving daily, and the meat hall runs alongside. Outside, Evripidou Street is lined with shops selling spices, nuts, cheese and cured meats. It is a working market and not a tourist show, which is why it is worth seeing.

Getting there
Panepistimio station on Metro line 2 and Monastiraki on lines 1 and 3 are each about ten minutes on foot.
Tip
Go before 10:00 on a weekday. The meat hall is intense, but the fish hall and the spice shops on Evripidou Street are worth the walk.
