The first tombs here date to the Early Bronze Age, and the cemetery stayed in use until about the sixth century AD. It was the burial ground of the Athenians, and wealthy families raised statues over their graves, including a stone bull and sirens. A section of the defensive wall of Themistocles runs through the site. The small Oberlander Museum holds jugs, perfume bottles and funeral gifts from the tombs.
