Barceloneta was laid out in the 1750s to rehouse people whose homes were pulled down for the citadel, and it grew into the fishing and port district. Its streets form a tight grid of narrow, low buildings, and the city beach runs along its eastern edge. The Mercat de la Barceloneta and the sea promenade are good for a walk, and the district is known for seafood at lunch. The beach is at its busiest in summer around midday.
