The museum opened in 1963 and now fills five connected medieval palaces on Carrer de Montcada. Picasso spent his teenage years and early career in Barcelona, and the collection is strongest on that period: academic drawings and paintings from his school days, work from the Blue Period and the series of variations on Las Meninas from 1957. The route runs through the old palace courtyards and stairs, and the rooms are small.

What to look for

  • Early drawings and paintings from his Barcelona school years
  • The series of 58 variations on Las Meninas
  • The medieval courtyards and stairs of the palaces
  • The Blue Period works
