The fortress stands on Montjuïc hill above the port. It began as a fort in 1640, took its present shape in the 18th century, and served as a military prison for much of the 19th and 20th centuries before it passed to the city in 2007. The visit covers the ramparts, the courtyard and the visitor centre, with temporary exhibitions on the ground floor. The terrace on the parade ground gives a 360 degree view over the city, the port, the sea and the airport side.
