The Royal Museums of Fine Arts hold the national collection of art in Brussels, spread over several sites. The Old Masters Museum covers Flemish and Dutch painting from the 15th century, with the Bruegel family among its best known names. The Magritte Museum, in a separate building on Place Royale, follows the painter from his early work to his late years. Both can be walked at an easy pace, and a visit to both takes most of a day.

What to look for

  • The Bruegel family rooms in the Old Masters Museum
  • Flemish painting from the 15th century onwards
  • Magritte's paintings and drawings in his own museum
  • The two buildings on either side of Place Royale

Tip

Pick one museum if time is short. The Old Masters Museum is the larger of the two and needs most of a morning.
