The museum was founded in 1802 and the neoclassical building dates from the 1840s. On 15 March 1848 the National Song was recited on its steps at the start of the revolution. Inside, a domed hall and a wide staircase lead to galleries on Hungarian history and archaeology. The visit is a calm contrast to the busier sights.
