A green island 2.8 kilometres long in the Danube between Buda and Pest, mostly closed to cars. It has gardens, ruins, running paths and shaded lawns for a slow afternoon.

Margaret Island is the greenest part of the city, with tree-lined paths along the riverbanks and a loop around the whole island. It holds a Japanese garden, a water tower, the ruins of medieval convents and an open air swimming complex. Most visitors come to walk or cycle, and the island is flat and easy for children.

Getting there
Take tram 4 or 6 to Margit híd and walk down onto the island, or bus 26 from Nyugati pályaudvar along its length.
Tip
Walk the length of the island in about 40 minutes, or rent a bike near the bridge and loop it. It is a good place to be on a hot afternoon.
