The square took its present form for the 1896 celebration of a thousand years since the Hungarian conquest and was completed in 1929. The column is ringed by the seven chieftains of the Magyars, and the two curved colonnades carry statues of rulers from a thousand years of history. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Műcsarnok art hall face each other across the square. Andrássy Avenue and the square are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
