The palace was built from 1299 as the seat of the Republic, became the Medici ducal residence and serves again as the town hall. The museum route climbs from the courtyard to the Hall of the Five Hundred, a huge room with Vasari's battle scenes on the walls, and goes on to the private apartments and the small studiolo of Francesco I. A separate ticket covers the tower and the battlements, with a view of the Duomo.
