The square has been the political centre of Florence since the 13th century, and Palazzo Vecchio still houses the city government. The sculpture stands in the open: a copy of Michelangelo's David at the palace door, the Neptune Fountain, an equestrian statue of Cosimo I and the Loggia dei Lanzi with Cellini's Perseus. A round plaque in the paving marks where Savonarola was burned in 1498.
