This was a fruit and vegetable market, and the central hall dates from the 1830s. It now holds shops, cafes and craft stalls. Street performers work the piazza, and the portico of St Paul's Church marks the western edge. The surrounding lanes, theatres and the Royal Opera House make it a natural stop between the Strand and Soho.
