The square was laid out in the 1840s around Nelson's Column. Four bronze lions guard the base, and the fountains and the steps below the National Gallery are the usual places to sit. The Fourth Plinth, in the north-west corner, carries a contemporary sculpture that changes every year or two. St Martin-in-the-Fields stands on the east side.
