The cemetery opened in the 1860s as the place where Milan's well-known families chose to be buried. The main building at the entrance, the Famedio, honours famous citizens, among them the novelist Alessandro Manzoni. Beyond it, long avenues hold sculpted tombs and chapels in styles from neo-Gothic to Art Nouveau and Futurist.
