The Marais covers the 3rd and 4th districts and kept its narrow streets and 17th-century mansions through the 19th-century rebuilding of Paris. Place des Vosges, finished in the early 1600s, is the central square. Many mansions now house museums, and there is an old Jewish quarter around rue des Rosiers. Shops here open on Sundays, unlike in most of the city, so the streets are busiest then.

What to look for

  • Place des Vosges and its brick arcades
  • The courtyards of the old mansions
  • Rue des Rosiers and the old Jewish quarter
