Livraria Lello is one of the best known bookshops in Europe and has traded in this building since 1906. You come in on the ground floor, climb the crimson staircase and look at the carved wooden shelves and the stained-glass skylight from above. A newer room holds rare books and first editions, and the shop runs exhibitions of contemporary art. The space is small, so timed tickets control how many people are inside.

Tip

Book the first slot of the day. The rooms are small, and the staircase is only clear for photographs early on.
