A district across the Tiber, long a working neighbourhood, with narrow lanes, ivy on the walls and small squares. The main sight is the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere with its medieval mosaics, but most visitors come to walk and to eat. It is calmer by day and fills with diners and bar crowds after dark.
