The tower was part of the Almohad defences along the river in the 13th century, and the name is usually linked to the golden shine it once had. Today it is run by the Spanish Navy as a maritime museum. The collection shows ship models, navigation instruments and charts connected to the river port and the voyages to America. A visit takes about half an hour.
