The gate was built between 1444 and 1460 to guard the road from Castile. In the 17th century it became a prison for women, and it stayed a prison in various forms until the 1930s. The towers still show the marks of bombardment from the French troops in the early 19th century. The visit is short, with the climb and the view from the terrace.

Link it with the Serranos towers in one walk through El Carmen, and check the sky first, since the climb can close in bad weather.
