Emperor Franz Joseph ordered the Ring built in 1857 on the ground of the old city walls, and the buildings along it went up between the 1860s and 1890s. The style is historicism, with Greek, Gothic and Renaissance forms used on different buildings. You can walk the whole circuit in about an hour and a half without stops, or take a section such as the stretch from the opera to the city hall. Many buildings can be seen from the outside only.
