St. Stephen's Cathedral

The cathedral stands on Stephansplatz and is the spiritual heart of the city. Its Gothic spire and the colourful tile pattern on the roof are visible from several streets away. Inside you can walk the nave on your own or join a public guided tour. The south tower is a climb of 343 steps, the north tower has a lift to a platform beside the Pummerin bell, and a guided tour goes down to the catacombs.

Opening hours

Visiting hours for the interior are Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 11:30 and every day 13:00 to 16:30. The towers are open daily 9:00 to 19:00, with the last climb of the south tower at 18:15 and the last lift to the north tower at 18:30. Restrictions apply during services and church events.

Tickets and booking

Adult ticket €8. The standard visit of the interior, each tower and the catacombs tour are priced separately. An all-inclusive ticket covers the interior with an audio guide, both towers, a catacombs tour and the Dom Museum Wien, and a child under 14 is included with each ticket.

Getting there

Stephansplatz station on the U1 and U3 lines is at the cathedral door.

Tip

Come in the morning, when the interior is open and the square is quieter, and add the south tower if the weather is clear.
