The gardens were laid out for the Medici from the 16th century behind the Pitti Palace and rise up the hill in long avenues, terraces and grottoes. They are among the earliest formal gardens in Italy and a model for many later ones in Europe. The climb is gentle but real, and the upper terraces give the best views over the roofs and the hills.

What to look for

  • The amphitheatre behind the palace
  • The Buontalenti Grotto
  • The Fountain of Neptune
