The square is the centre of the Oltrarno neighbourhood. The basilica of Santo Spirito, designed by Brunelleschi, closes one side with a plain facade that was never finished. Cafes and bars line the edge, and the square is full of locals from morning until late evening. It is a good place to stop after the Pitti Palace.

Getting there
Cross the river from the Ponte Vecchio and walk about eight minutes, or take a bus to the Santo Spirito stop on the square.

Come in the early evening for an aperitivo after the museums close.
