Free tapa with every drink

In many Granada bars a small plate arrives with each drink, and the plates grow as you order more. It makes a cheap dinner, and the trick is to order drinks, not food.

Tortilla del Sacromonte

A thick omelette from the Sacromonte caves, traditionally made with lamb brain and testicles and now often served in a plainer version. Ask what is in it first.

Remojón granadino

A cold salad of orange, salt cod, olives and onion, dressed with olive oil. People eat it mostly in winter, when oranges are in season.

Habas con jamón

Broad beans stewed with cured ham, a spring dish served as a tapa or a main.

Piononos

Small cylinders of sponge soaked in syrup and topped with cream, from the nearby town of Santa Fe. Have one with coffee.

Jamón de Trevélez

Cured ham from the Alpujarras village of Trevélez, dried in mountain air. It turns up in tapas and in the plato alpujarreño.

Every itinerary on this site keeps a lunch break after 12:30, so there is room for a proper meal in the middle of the day.

Besides the sights

  • Flamenco in a Sacromonte caveSmall shows in whitewashed caves, held in the evening. The rooms hold few people, so book a day ahead.
  • Tea houses on Calle Calderería NuevaA narrow lane of Moroccan-style tea houses with mint tea, sweets and cushions, just below the Albaicín. It is best after dark.
  • An Arab-style bath sessionModern hammams in the old town offer warm pools and a massage in Moorish-style rooms. A good use of a cold or wet afternoon.
  • Sunset from a quieter viewpointSan Miguel Alto, a hilltop with a chapel above the Albaicín, gives a wide view without the crowds of San Nicolás. The climb takes about 30 minutes.
  • A day on Sierra NevadaIn winter the ski resort is about 45 minutes from the city by road. In summer the high paths are cooler than Granada, and buses and organised tours leave from the centre.
