The Veneranda Fabbrica was founded in 1387 to build the cathedral, and it still maintains the building today. Inside you see five aisles and tall stained glass, with the San Carlo crypt below the altar on a separate ticket. The roof is the main event: about 8,000 square metres of terraces in Candoglia marble, reached by 251 steps on foot or by a lift to the first level.

What to look for

  • The roof terraces among the spires and statues
  • The gilded Madonnina on the highest spire
  • Stained glass in the apse
  • The archaeological area under the square (extra ticket)

Tip

Go up to the terraces in the first slots of the morning, when the marble is cool and the light on the spires is soft. Cover shoulders and knees, and leave large bags at the luggage storage.
