The architect Giuseppe Mengoni built the Galleria between 1865 and 1877 as a covered street between the cathedral and the opera house. The shops still use gold lettering on black, as the original design required. Mosaics of four city symbols cover the floor of the central octagon.
What to look for
- The glass and iron dome over the octagon
- The mosaic bull on the floor, where people turn on one heel for luck
- The gold on black shop signs
- The view out to La Scala at the northern end
Opening hours
Always open.
The arcade is a public passage and is open at all hours. The shops keep their own hours.
