The Hofgarten was begun in 1613 under Duke Maximilian I as part of the Residenz and follows an Italian Renaissance plan. Eight paths radiate from a small temple at the centre, with flowerbeds, fountains and arcades around it. Odeonsplatz on the south side is framed by the yellow Theatinerkirche and the loggia of the Feldherrnhalle. The garden is calm in the morning and busy with people on benches by midday.
