Prague by season

Spring

7 to 16 °C · about 8 rainy days a month

April highs reach about 16 degrees and May about 21, with rain on 7 to 10 days a month. The Castle gardens reopen in March and the parks turn green through April.

What to wear: Pack layers, a light waterproof jacket and shoes that cope with wet cobbles.

Summer

16 to 26 °C · about 9 rainy days a month

Highs run 24 to 27 degrees from June to August, with warm evenings and the largest crowds on Charles Bridge and in the Castle. Rain falls on about nine or ten days a month.

What to wear: Wear light clothes, a hat and sunscreen by day, and carry a thin layer for evenings by the river.

Autumn

8 to 14 °C · about 7 rainy days a month

September stays warm at about 20 degrees, and October cools to about 14 as the days shorten quickly. Queues thin out after the summer peak.

What to wear: Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket, and shoes with grip from October.

Winter

0 to 5 °C · about 7 rainy days a month

Winter highs are 4 to 6 degrees, and nights sit around freezing, with snow possible but not reliable. Daylight is short, and the Christmas markets run from late November into January.

What to wear: Wear a warm coat, hat and gloves, and boots with grip, because the Castle approach and the bridge are slippery in frost.

If it rains

Rain falls on 6 to 10 days a month, so keep an indoor option for each day. The Jewish Museum synagogues, the National Museum, the Strahov Library, the Castle buildings and St Nicholas Church all work in wet weather. Views from the Petřín tower and the bridge are poor in low cloud, and wet cobbles make the Castle approach slippery.

The rainy-day plan for Prague

If it is hot and sunny

Summer afternoons reach 26 or 27 degrees, and there is little shade on Charles Bridge, on Old Town Square and in the Castle courtyards. See those early or after 18:00, and use museums and churches in the middle of the day. Carry water, and use the trees on Petřín or Kampa when you need a break.
