The gallery sits in a villa built in the 17th century by Cardinal Scipione Borghese to hold his collection. The ground floor has sculpture, including several works by Bernini, and the upper floor has paintings. Visits run in two hour slots with a limited number of people, so the rooms never feel packed.

What to look for

  • Bernini's Apollo and Daphne
  • Bernini's Rape of Proserpina
  • Canova's Pauline Bonaparte as Venus
  • The Caravaggio canvases on the upper floor
