Aníbal González designed the square, which was built between 1914 and 1928 for the 1929 exposition. A semicircular building with two tall towers wraps around a large open space and a central fountain. A canal about 515 metres long runs along its perimeter, and you can cross it by bridge or row across it in a hired boat. Along the base of the building, tiled alcoves show scenes from the 48 Spanish provinces.
