The museum occupies a former charity complex with a church and monastery, and its collection grew from the Venetian art academy. Paintings run roughly in order from the medieval altarpieces to the great Renaissance canvases and on to the 18th century. Several works are so large that they fill whole walls, so the visit is as much about scale as detail. Allow time for the long rooms of the Veronese and Tintoretto paintings.

What to look for

  • Giorgione's The Tempest
  • Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi
  • Titian's Pietà
  • Carpaccio's cycle of Saint Ursula

Tip

Take the first slot of the day. The rooms are quieter early and the light on the large canvases is better.
