The Scuola Grande di San Rocco was the home of a lay brotherhood devoted to St Roch, the saint invoked against plague. Tintoretto painted most of the interior over about two decades, and the result is one of the largest single cycles in Venice. The ground floor hall and the upper hall are covered with biblical scenes, and the Sala dell'Albergo holds a large Crucifixion. The building offers no guided tours of its own, so the multimedia guide helps with the sequence.

What to look for

  • The Crucifixion in the Sala dell'Albergo
  • The ceiling cycle in the upper hall
  • The monumental staircase
