Gràcia was a separate town until Barcelona absorbed it in 1897, and it still keeps its own character. Its core is a set of small squares, among them Plaça del Sol, Plaça de la Vila with its clock tower, Plaça de la Virreina and Plaça del Diamant. In mid August residents decorate their streets for the neighbourhood festival. There are few big monuments, and the interest is in the terraces, the shops and the pace.
