The building was bombed in the Second World War and left as a ruin for decades. David Chipperfield rebuilt it, and it reopened in 2009 with the damaged walls and murals still visible beside the new work. The Egyptian collection is on the upper floors and Nefertiti has a room to herself. The museum holds around 9,000 exhibits across four levels, so choose a few rooms instead of trying to see them all.
What to look for
- The bust of Nefertiti in its own room
- Papyrus and Egyptian coffins
- The war damaged walls kept in the stair hall
