The gate was built for the Prussian king and finished in 1791. While the Wall divided the city it stood inside the border zone, and after 1989 it became the symbol of reunification. Today it stands at the edge of a pedestrian square lined with embassies. The visit is a short one, so most people pair it with the Reichstag and the Holocaust Memorial nearby.
