Peter Eisenman designed the field, which opened in 2005 near the former border strip. You walk in from any side and the slabs rise above head height toward the middle, so the ground and the noise of the city fall away. Below the field the information centre holds an exhibition on the victims, with personal stories and documents. The two parts take different amounts of time: the field is a short walk, the centre needs an hour if you read.

What to look for

  • Walking into the middle of the field where the slabs are tallest
  • The exhibition rooms of the information centre
