The Albaicín is Granada's oldest quarter and part of the same UNESCO listing as the Alhambra. Its lanes follow the medieval street plan, with cármenes, which are houses with walled gardens, behind high white walls. You pass old gates, small churches built where mosques once stood and the occasional cistern. It is best walked slowly, with no list of things to tick off.
What to look for
- Cármenes seen through open gates
- Plaza Larga and the lanes around it
- The old Elvira Gate at the foot of the hill
- Alhambra views from small corners between houses
Opening hours
Always open.

Tickets and booking
Free. Walking the quarter is free.
Getting there
Bus C31, C32 or C34 leaves from Plaza Nueva, and walking up from there takes 15 to 20 minutes on steep streets.
Tip
Go in the morning, when the lanes are quiet and cool, and walk down rather than up if your legs are tired. Flat shoes matter on the cobbles.
