The Catholic Monarchs founded the monastery in 1492, and building began on its present site in 1503. The visit covers the Compás, the Gothic cloister, the refectory, the chapter houses, the sacristy and the church. The main chapel was built as a mausoleum for Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Gran Capitán. A community of nuns still lives here, and some areas are closed to visitors.
