English Garden

One of the largest city parks in the world, 5.5 km long from the old town to the north. It holds meadows, lakes, a Greek-style temple, a pagoda with a beer garden and a standing wave on the Eisbach.

The park was laid out from 1789 and is considered the first public park in Germany. Paths run through open lawns, wooded stretches and along streams that branch off the Isar. At the southern end, surfers ride the Eisbach wave all year, and watching from the bridge costs nothing. The Chinese Tower beer garden has room for thousands of people under chestnut trees.
