Théophile Seyrig, a student of Eiffel, designed the bridge, which opened in 1886 and is 395 metres long. The upper deck carries the metro and pedestrians at the height of the hilltops, with a wide view over the river, Ribeira and the Gaia cellars. The lower deck is closer to the water, calmer, and runs straight into Ribeira. Most visitors cross one way on each deck.
