Porto · Ribeira and the waterfront

Ribeira

The riverside quarter at the foot of the old town, with narrow lanes, tall tiled houses and the quay along the Douro. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage area and the view most people picture first.

Ribeira is the old merchant quarter that grew around the river port. It is a tight mesh of lanes, arcades and stairways between the quay and the cathedral hill. The visit is a walk, not a list of ticketed sights: follow the quay under the bridge, climb one lane, and come back down by another. The quay is busy at lunch and again after sunset, and quieter in the early morning.

What to look for

  • The quay below Dom Luís I Bridge, with the Gaia cellars across the water
  • Postigo do Carvão, the one surviving gate of the old Fernandine wall
  • Stairways and lanes climbing behind the quay
  • Rabelo boats, the old wine barges, moored on the river

Opening hours

Always open.
