A Gothic church whose interior was covered in gilded wood carving in the 17th and 18th centuries. The visit also takes in the museum and the catacombs.

The church was begun in the 14th century and has been a National Monument since 1910. The outside is plain Gothic, which makes the gilded Baroque interior a surprise: walls, pillars and ceiling are carved wood under gold leaf. Under the church, the catacombs hold the tombs of friars and of local families, with an ossuary. The museum includes the Casa do Despacho, the room where the brotherhood met.

Ticket office hours are 09:00 to 20:00 from 1 April to 30 September and 09:00 to 19:00 from 1 October to 31 March. Closed on 25 December.

Getting there

São Bento (Metro) is about a ten minute walk away, and the church stands on Rua do Infante Dom Henrique, next to the stock exchange.
