The cave-house quarter on the hill above the Darro, long a Roma neighbourhood and the home of zambra flamenco. The streets are steep and the views face the Alhambra.

Sacromonte climbs the hill beyond the Albaicín along the Camino del Sacromonte. People have lived in the cave houses cut into the slope for centuries, and the quarter is known as the home of the zambra, a local flamenco form. The open-air cave museum shows how the dwellings, kitchens and workshops were used. At the top, the Abbey stands on the Valparaíso hill, with catacombs under the church.

Opening hours

Always open.

The Sacromonte Abbey keeps its own hours: 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:30 to 18:00 until 25 October, then 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 17:00. A Sunday mass at 12:00 closes the church to visitors.

Tickets and booking

Free. Walking the quarter is free. The Abbey and the cave museum each charge their own entry.

Getting there

Bus C34 runs along the Camino del Sacromonte from Plaza Nueva, and walking up from the Darro takes 25 to 30 minutes.

Walk up in the late afternoon after the heat and stay for the evening. Flamenco shows in the caves are small, so reserve ahead.
