Naples · Via Toledo and Quartieri Spagnoli
Quartieri Spagnoli
A dense grid of steep, narrow streets west of Via Toledo, laid out in the 16th century for Spanish troops. It is a place to walk through, not a sight with a gate.

The district was built as a grid of tall buildings to house soldiers, and daily life still happens in the street: laundry lines, shrines, small workshops and bars. Murals mark corners of the district, and a large one of Diego Maradona is the best known. People live here, so keep your voice down and ask before photographing anyone.
