The square was laid out in the early 19th century. A curved colonnade leads to the church of San Francesco di Paola, whose dome was modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, and the Royal Palace fills the long side opposite. Two equestrian statues stand in the open space. The paving holds the heat on summer afternoons.
