The cavities under the city were quarried for tuff in Greek and Roman times and later used as cisterns. The tour goes down 136 steps with handrails and follows a mostly regular, straight floor. One candlelit passage is narrow, and you can wait outside it for about ten minutes. Buggies are not allowed, so small children are carried.

Tickets and booking
Adult ticket €18. The standard adult ticket covers the guided tour, and reduced rates exist for visitors with a disability.
Small groups can turn up without a reservation, but a queue-jump ticket from the official booking page saves waiting for the next slot in busy periods. Tours in other languages need a booking.
Getting there
The entrance is on Piazza San Gaetano, on Via dei Tribunali next to the church of San Paolo Maggiore, about ten minutes from Dante station. The official site warns that map apps can show the wrong place, so follow its directions.
Tip
Bring a jumper, because it is cool at depth even in summer. The one narrow passage is optional.
