The building went up in the 16th century as a cavalry barracks, then became a university and later the royal museum. Today it holds most of the portable finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, including frescoes, mosaics and everyday objects, along with the marbles of the Farnese family. Rooms are arranged by collection rather than along one fixed route, so decide before you enter what you want to see.
