The square has been the heart of the Old Town since the twelfth century. The Old Town Hall with its clock tower, the twin spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn, the Baroque Church of St Nicholas and the Rococo Kinský Palace all face it. Memorial stones in the paving mark where 27 Czech nobles were executed in 1621, and a line in the stones marks the Prague meridian. The monument to Jan Hus stands in the middle.
