The route at a glance
The route starts in Berlin and ends in Munich, so you never backtrack. Both cities have an international airport, which makes an open-jaw ticket easy: fly into Berlin, fly home from Munich, and the long leg between them is done by train.
Days 1 to 2
Berlin
Berlin is wide and flat, but the sights of a first visit sit along one line from the Reichstag to Alexanderplatz. Most of the history here is recent, and it is explained on the spot, from the Wall to the memorials. Neighbourhoods like Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg fill the gaps between the big stops.

Days 3 to 5
Munich
Munich is the capital of Bavaria, with a compact old town around Marienplatz and the big museums and palaces spread a short ride away. The Residenz, the Alte Pinakothek and the Deutsches Museum hold the indoor days, while the English Garden and the Isar hold the outdoor ones. Beer gardens and the Alps on the southern horizon set the pace.

Register online before your visit with the full name and date of birth of every visitor. If places remain, you can register at the service centre on Platz der Republik at least two hours before your visit. Visitors aged 16 or over need original photo ID.
What the route costs
Per person: tickets for the stops on the route, food and local transport. Trains between cities and the hotel are not included.
Stops with a ticket whose price we could not confirm are left out of the sum.
Trains between the cities
The ICE trains of Deutsche Bahn run directly between Berlin Hbf and München Hbf, many times a day, and the journey takes around four hours from centre to centre. Seat reservations are optional on ICE trains, though they are worth adding on Fridays, Sundays and holiday periods. Booking a few weeks ahead gives more choice of fares and seats.
When to go
May, June and September suit both cities, with mild days and long light. Early October is also good, but Munich is busy while Oktoberfest runs, so hotels there need booking early.
Before you go
- Book Berlin and Munich as an open-jaw flight so the train replaces a return trip to the first airport.
- Take a morning train between the cities, so the day is spent in the second city and not on the platform.
- Buy the train ticket in the Deutsche Bahn app and keep it on your phone, and carry a photo ID, which can be asked for on board.
- Both main stations are in the centre and connect to local metro and S-Bahn lines, so you rarely need a taxi from the platform.
